Lots of Fun Stuff to Do in Madison and the Vicinity

If you are in town for the day or come early, there's tons of stuff to do in the area:

Farmer's Market - Sat. morning on the Capital Square from dawn to 1ish.

This is the largest farmer's market in the US. Lots of good food, live music, booths and great people watching.

State Street

State Street is a pedestrian street that runs from the Capital to the University. It is chock full of interesting independent stores like A Room of One's Own Feminist Bookstore, Little Luxuries, Ragstock, The Soap Opera and more coffee shops than we can count.

MMoCA and the Overture Center

Check out the nifty new Overture Center and Madison Museum of Contemporary Art on State St. Museum is free.

Chazen Museum of Art (formerly the Elvehjem)

The UW's art museum always has a nice traveling show and a small but interesting permanent exhibit.

Olbrich Botanical Gardens

Free botanical gardens with nifty pagoda, plus an indoor tropical area ($1).

If you're up for more of a day excursion, there are tons of bike and canoe rental places. Also, great hiking trails and bike paths all over the city.

State Parks - In particular, Devil's Lake and Natural Bridge State Parks are gorgeous and only a short drive away.

Bike Trails

Ice Age Trails

Dr. Evermor's Forevertron - Not to be missed. The world's largest scrap metal sculpture. Incredible and beautiful!
