If you are in town for the day or come early,
there's tons of stuff to do in the area:
Farmer's
Market - Sat. morning on the Capital Square from dawn
to 1ish.
This is the largest farmer's market in the
US. Lots of good food, live music, booths and great people
watching.
State Street
State Street is a pedestrian street that runs
from the Capital to the University. It is chock full of
interesting independent stores like A Room of One's Own
Feminist Bookstore, Little Luxuries, Ragstock, The Soap
Opera and more coffee shops than we can count.
MMoCA
and the Overture Center
Check out the nifty new Overture Center and
Madison Museum of Contemporary Art on State St. Museum is
free.
Chazen
Museum of Art (formerly the Elvehjem)
The UW's art museum always has a nice traveling
show and a small but interesting permanent exhibit.
Olbrich
Botanical Gardens
Free botanical gardens with nifty pagoda,
plus an indoor tropical area ($1).
If you're up for more of a day excursion, there
are tons of bike and canoe rental places. Also, great hiking
trails and bike paths all over the city.
State
Parks - In particular, Devil's Lake and Natural
Bridge State Parks are gorgeous and only a short drive away.
